Ford’s Mustang stable keeps growing, and now we have a new generation in the mix. Combined, there are 14 Mustang variants and trim levels for the 2024 model year, spanning a wide performance spectrum from the electric Mach-E crossover to the new Dark Horse with a thumping 500-horsepower V8. There are even a host of track-only Mustang race cars for buyers to choose from.
The Mustang lineup at Ford will only grow from here. We’ve yet to see Shelby variants, never mind tuned versions from notable houses like Roush, Hennessey, and others. For now, we have the electric Mach-E crossover and Ford’s seventh-generation S650 pony, offering sharper distinctions between four-cylinder and V8 models. The traditional two-door doesn't offer any measure of electrification, which some might find interesting given the rapid pace of evolution in the automotive landscape. But V8 power has been the Mustang’s calling card for almost 60 years. It will remain so for the foreseeable future.
Mustang EcoBoost

The cheapest way to get into a new Mustang is the base EcoBoost model. Powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, the entry-level ‘Stang produces 315 hp and 350 pound-feet of torque, which means it can sprint to 60 mph in a sprightly 4.9 seconds. The base Mustang EcoBoost fastback costs $32,515 (including the $1,595 destination charge), while the convertible costs $40,615.
Mustang EcoBoost Premium

Moving up from the base Mustang EcoBoost, the EcoBoost Premium model offers a bit more in the way of features. With Premium you get leather seats, the latest Sync 4.0 infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, heated side mirrors, and selectable drive modes. Power doesn't change – this model still uses the same turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, good for 315 hp – but the price increases to $38,040 for the coupe and $43,540 for the convertible.
Mustang GT

If it's relatively inexpensive V8 power you're after, the Mustang GT is the one to get. The pony car packs a revised 5.0-liter engine for 2024, now making 480 hp (486 with the optional exhaust upgrade) and 415 lb-ft. Shifting is still done manually with a six-speed, or automatically with a 10-speed box. Standard features include a 12.4-inch driver display and a 13.2-inch center screen, 18-inch wheels, Ford's Sync 4, and more. The Mustang GT costs $44,090 to start but is only available as a coupe.
Mustang GT Premium

The Mustang GT Premium follows the same template as the EcoBoost Premium, adding numerous interior upgrades such as heated/cooled seats, a nine-speaker stereo, and much more. Outside, the GT Premium rides on 19-inch wheels, and for the sun worshippers out there, this is the only way to get a GT Convertible. Prices start at $48,610 for the hardtop and $54,110 for the Convertible.
Mustang Dark Horse

The standard Mustang GT offers plenty of go power, but the Dark Horse knows how to dance. In addition to 20 more horsepower, it gets a host of suspension upgrades. An extra $12,000 buys new 19-inch wheels, stickier tires, Brembo six-piston brakes, active exhaust, a stiffer suspension, and more. It replaces the Mach 1 in the Mustang lineup, and while it’s a harder-edged pony, it’s capable of comfort thanks to MagnaRide dampers, which help smooth out potholes and other obstacles. There's a literal price to pay for such fun though, with a starting MSRP of $60,865.
Mustang Dark Horse Premium

Like the EcoBoost and GT models, the Mustang Dark Horse Premium adds additional features in the form of the 700A option package. It includes aluminum foot pedals, exterior lighting with approach detection, heated and cooled front seats, and premier trim with a color accent. The price starts at $64,860 and approaches $80,000 with all the option boxes checked.
Mustang Dark Horse R

The Mustang Dark Horse R has all of the goodies of the S but adds wheels from Ford Performance Parts, a fuel cell for better range, and bespoke seam welding. Additionally, the R has special serialization tailored to race cars and is intended for actual racing as opposed to the S, which is intended as a purpose-built weekend track toy. In fact, Ford even hosts a one-make racing series through IMSA in which Dark Horse R owners can compete.
Mustang GT4

Starting with the Dark Horse as a template, the Mustang GT4 is a purpose-built race car with a Coyote-based 5.0-liter V8 engine, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and a Holinger dog-ring gearbox. Ford has not released prices or performance specs yet, but the GT4 is built to compete in the SRO GT4 category. The bodywork includes a unique aero package that meets the class rules, including a front splitter with canards, a vented hood, and a large rear wing. A big step up from the track-only Dark Horse S and Dark Horse R, the GT4 slots in just below the GT3.
Mustang GT3

The Mustang GT3 is more than just a more-powerful GT4. Starting with a 5.4-liter version of the Coyote V8 built by M-Sport, it adds a short-long arm suspension and a rear-mounted transaxle. Ford has not provided official numbers yet, but since GT3 class race cars make around 500 horsepower, that’s probably a reasonable estimate.
For 2024, Ford Performance has teamed up with Multimatic Motorsports to race the Mustang GT3 in the IMSA GTD Pro class, which includes the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Meanwhile, Proton Competition will prepare a pair of cars for the 2024 World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Mustang Mach-E Select

The Mach-E is a sales success. No, it’s not a traditional Mustang as we’ve known it through the decades, but it offers exhilarating performance with a dose of practicality for a reasonable price in the performance EV segment. And it wears a Mustang badge, so it counts. We're awaiting 2024 information; we will update this list when 2024 data is available but for now, here's how Mach-E stands for 2023.
In its base Select form, the crossover EV pairs a 70-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with either a single-motor rear-drive layout or an optional dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup. It starts at 266 hp with RWD, and that's how you'll get the EPA-estimated range of 247 miles on a charge. Adding the dual-motor powertrain dings the range down to 226 miles. Prices have fallen on many Mach-E trims, so the current model's $45,940 base price is actually a few grand less than last year.
Mustang Mach-E Premium

While every Mach-E comes with a handsome cabin and a 15.5-inch portrait-oriented display, the Premium is available with an extended-range 91.0-kilowatt-hour battery that delivers up to 310 miles in rear-drive trim and 290 miles with all-wheel drive. With the bigger pack and twin electric motors, drivers have 346 hp and 428 lb-ft at their disposal, allowing 4.8-second sprints to 60 mph. And while prices are down a bit on the Select, Premium trims are down a full 10 grand from last year with the MSRP for a RWD model starting at $48,795.
Mach-E California Route 1

Not all Mach-E trims are cheaper than before. You'll pay a bit more for the long-range California Route 1 with a starting price of $58,795. That's almost $5,000 more than last year, but you get the larger 91.0-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery as standard with smaller 18-inch wheels. Available only with the dual-motor AWD layout, it offers an estimated range of 312 miles to accompany its hefty 346-hp punch.
Mustang Mach-E GT

Ford’s first muscle EV, the Mach-E GT packs the extended-range battery and dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain as standard. In this application, output grows to 480 hp and 600 lb-ft, enough to reach 60 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds. There's a range penalty, however, with a maximum EPA-estimated distance of 270 miles per charge. With a sport-tuned suspension, bigger wheels, sticky tires, and unique exterior enhancements, it's the choice for performance-minded EV shoppers. Fortunately, prices on the GT are down a bit, with a starting MSRP of $61,795.
Mustang Mach-E Rally

Making an exterior-only debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Mach-E Rally marks the first time the Mustang moniker has graced a vehicle aimed at off-pavement fun. We were only shown the outside; Ford hasn’t provided details regarding power, range, or upgrades to make this Mach-E off-road friendly. We clearly see a large rear spoiler, a custom faux grille with two additional lights, and white rally-style wheels with all-terrain tires. Performance is expected to best the Mach-E GT, but we will find out in the fall of 2023 when a full debut takes place.
